Full Story

India's scorching heatwave is on the move. While South Peninsular India gets a temporary reprieve, fresh heatwave warnings are issued for Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a respite for South India today, followed by a wet spell with thunderstorms and gusty winds till May 11th. However, scorching temperatures are expected to grip Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh from May 8th to 10th.

Lingering Heat and Scorching New Threat

The past 24 hours saw heatwave conditions persist in isolated pockets of South India, with the highest temperature recorded at a staggering 46 degrees Celsius in Nandyal, Rayalaseema. While heatwave conditions are expected to ease in most of South India, Rayalaseema, some areas of Tamil Nadu, and interior Karnataka may still experience them on May 7th.

Meanwhile, a new heatwave threat looms over Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh. The IMD warns of heatwave conditions in these regions from May 8th to 10th. Additionally, hot and humid weather is likely to persist in parts of Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and coastal Karnataka over the next five days.

Heatwave's Toll and Relief Measures

The scorching heatwave has caused immense hardship, particularly for those working outdoors. Kerala's Congress party has urged the state government to provide financial assistance to families affected by the heatwave and farmers whose crops have been damaged. Authorities are advising people to stay hydrated and avoid venturing out during the peak heat hours.

Elections and Extreme Weather

The ongoing heatwave coincides with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections 2024, raising concerns about voter turnout. The IMD had earlier predicted an increase in heatwave days due to El Nino conditions. As polling continues across 12 states today, both voters and election officials are braving the harsh weather.
